The 2020 lockdown led to more people enjoying the outdoors and becoming active which resulted in 1.3 million Brits buying a bike, 33% of them were e-Bikes, an increase of 14% from 2019.
This trend has continued into 2021 and according to a well known UK bike retailer, demand for e-Bikes and e-Scooters has grown by more than 200%.
But what’s so special about them? Why are so many people buying e-Bikes?
Can they really help people?
The answer is yes!
There are a number of ways e-Bikes can help improve your life, and we’ve listed the 6 main ones below.
1. Have multiple use
One of the biggest misconceptions about e-Bikes is that they’re for old people or those who are too lazy to use a normal pedal bike.
This is not true. e-Bikes can be and have been used by different age groups and for different reasons.
They’ve been used for:
- Running errands
- Staying active
- Last-mile deliveries
- By police forces to carry out their duties more efficiently
- And more
2. Improve health
Did you know that the fitness benefits of riding an e-Bike aren’t that different compared to a normal pedal bike?
A study carried out in 2017 showed that e-Bike riders were 8.5 times more active than when static, whereas cyclists using a pedal bike were 10.9 times more active.
Not everyone might be willing to or capable of riding a bike from the start, e-Bikes are less taxing on the body so they work as a great middle ground to build up your fitness before levelling up to riding a bike.
But once you use an e-Bike, it’s likely you’ll continue using it for a long time.
3. Save money
e-Bike prices can range from £1000 to £10,000 depending on whether you’re looking to buy on a budget or want a premium e-Bike.
While the initial cost of buying an e-Bike might seem expensive, if you consider the additional benefits of riding an e-Bike, they come out on top.
When comparing an e-Bike to a car, the cost of owning and running an e-Bike is significantly lower than that of a car.
It could cost up to £2,500 to maintain a car over the course of a year, taking into account insurance, fuel, maintenance and parking. Whereas, it would cost around £200 to maintain an e-Bike over the course of a year.
4. Make commuting easier and quicker
No one likes to show up to work sweaty or late, that’s what could happen if you cycle to work using a pedal bike or use public transport where you have 100 people crammed into a bus or tube.
e-Bikes could save you that hassle (and embarrassment). With cycling infrastructure constantly improving, you could get to work quicker than car or public transport.
Plus you don’t have to worry about finding a parking spot and paying for it. It could cost up to £10 per day to park a car, whereas you could either store the e-Bike inside the office or outside if there’s a bike rack, most likely for free!
And it isn’t just the personal cost saving you will benefit from, since 2009, it’s cost the economy over £10 billion due to congestion.
Given the current climate, I’m sure the economy could do with an extra £10 billion.
5. Help the planet
Transport accounts for nearly 30% of all carbon emissions in the UK.
Cars produce around 60 million tonnes of CO2 per year, this could potentially be halved by using e-Bikes.
Countries like Germany and Netherlands are great examples of how switching to e-Mobility can improve the environment and the quality of life of people.
The lockdowns over the past couple of years have shown that people are willing to change their habits not just for themselves but for the planet too.
You could play your part in this too and enjoy the benefits e-Bikes can bring to health and well-being.
6. You’ll enjoy it too much
No one can explain the magic of an e-Bike, as soon as people start using one, they fall in love with it.
The motor assistance makes it very easy to travel long distances and up hills without breaking a sweat and feeling tired.
This means, if you’re someone who likes the outdoors and travelling, you’ll get to enjoy it for longer and can even take the whole family out with you without worrying about either the kids or grandparents getting tired after cycling for an hour or two.
